ended up being the high bidder on a nikkor 300mm f4.5 telephoto lens yesterday on ebay.
looks like i've picked it up for about half the price of one in the shop.
now the mission is to find a suitable camera body for it - probably a nikkormat ft or similar.

at the moment i'm thinking about getting a 300mm telephoto lens of some sort.
i'm going down to philip island for the superbikes soon and i want to get some
shots of the racing and the people etc. i don't know yet whether i will buy one
or borrow one. whatever happens i will probably have to buy a camera body to
go with it as i doubt i will be able to get a 300 for my OM1.
